Join us to discuss Professor Eleonora Pasotti's current project, titled "Death and the State: Lessons from Comparative Legal Analysis"! UCSC Politics Professor Elizabeth Beaumont will serve as the opening discussant. A work-in-progress of the paper will be circulated one week in advance of the talk. Lunch will be provided.
About
Eleonora Pasotti is a Professor in the Politics Department at UCSC. Her work focuses on comparative urban politics, with an interest in urban electoral institutions, political economy, and social movements. Professor Pasotti's research explores the dynamics of preference formation and institutional constraints, as applies to both political elites and civl society. She applies this research interest to the field of comparative urban politics, with wide-ranging transregional analysis of both mayoral politics and social movements.
Professor Pasotti is the author of Resisting Redevelopment: Protest in Aspiring Global Cities, recently published by Cambridge University Press in 2020. This book explores collective action at the neighborhood level in 29 protest cases set in ten cities across the globe. It explains how residents with no prior background in activism, and in cities where both political leadership and institutions disfavor their cause, can organize and achieve remarkable and sustained policy impact. Resisting Redevelopment won the 2021 Charles Tilly Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship Book Award (American Sociological Association Section on Collective Behavior and Social Movements), and received the 2021 Honorable Mention for the Dennis Judd Best Book Award (American Political Science Association, Urban Politics Section).
