Biography, Education and Training

Gary Patton received his BA from Stanford University, as a history major, with Honors in Social Thought and Institutions. He received his JD from Stanford Law School, and he was admitted to the California State Bar in 1971. He is currently practicing environmental law as a sole practitioner in Santa Cruz, California, while also teaching courses as an adjunct professor, in the Politics Department (Legal Studies Major) at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

From 1971 to approximately 1979, Mr. Patton maintained a private law practice in Santa Cruz, California. From 1975 to 1995 he served as an elected member of the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors. From 1995 to 1998, he was the General Counsel of The Planning and Conservation League. From 1998 to 2005, he served as the Executive Director of LandWatch Monterey County. From 2005 until February 2008, he served as the Executive Director of the Planning and Conservation League, and the PCL Foundation, and served as PCL General Counsel from February to October 2008. Mr. Patton was “Of Counsel” to the law firm of Wittwer & Parkin from November 2008 to October 2013.
