Declaring the Major

Prerequisites to Declaring the Major

All Politics majors are required to complete and pass with a grade of “C” or better two introductory Politics courses (chosen from Politics 1-79), prior to declaring the major in Politics. (These have an IS general education code). Will now be required to declare the major. Students entering UCSC with one successfully completed lower division course accepted by UCSC and approved by the Politics Undergraduate Committee. Are required to enroll in a UCSC Politics lower division course as soon as they are able and complete the course before declaring the major. Unless you started UCSC prior to 2009-10 or are a transfer student.

STEP 1
Print off a Petition for Declaration of Change of Major http://advising.ucsc.edu/student/declaration/Declaration.pdf and fill out the General Education section that you have completed or pick up a Petition for Declaration or Change of Major at your College office. The General Education requirements section must be completed and the document signed by your College's Academic Preceptor.

STEP 2
Sign up for a Major orientation workshop in the Politics Department. A sign-up sheet is located on the bulletin board outside Merrill 23 where the orientation is held. At the orientation, the Undergraduate Program Advisor will review requirements, answer questions, assign faculty advisors, and work with you to complete your major worksheet / study plan. (Don't be more than 10 minutes late or you'll need to sign up for another workshop.)

STEP 3
After you have attended the orientation, you will meet with your assigned faculty advisor for review of your major worksheet / study plan. Your faculty advisor may suggest that you alter your study plan to achieve greater breadth or concentration (your study plan can be revised later).

STEP 4
After all the necessary signatures have been obtained, return the major worksheet and petition to the Undergraduate Advisor in Merrill 27. Your petition will be forwarded to your college.

We recommend that at the end of your junior year, you do a "graduation check"--review your major requirements with the Politics advisor. Come by and pick up and complete the "Senior Check" form just outside Merrill 27 on the right hand wall and drop it off in the tray inside Merrill 27 on the file cabinet. The Undergraduate Advisor will email you the results of the senior checks within 3-5 business days.
